The newspaper industry has been characterized by declining print sales and rising digital sales. With a few exceptions, most newspapers' digital sales growth has not fully offset the decline in print sales. There are many factors that contribute to the characteristics of this trend. Outside newspapers face stiff competition from larger platforms such as social media platforms and general search leads. Internally, the way media is regulated and consolidated affects the diversity and integrity of journalism. Together, these factors undermine the democratic process and financial viability of independent newspaper editorial societies.
